Marino Lodge is situated within a 4500 acre estate, with excellent hill walking and hind shooting available on request. There are numerous sandy beaches and secret coves to explore in the immediate area but there is also plenty more to do a little further afield. You can enjoy all of the following activities on the estate, if arranged in advance:
Please contact Alistair Forbes if you wish to arrange any of the above.
Below are just a few ideas of things to do in the area during your stay at Marino: Mallaig: (23 miles) This busy fishing port is within easy reach of the Lodge. The town has a Heritage Centre and Marine Aquarium. From Mallaig you can organise boat trips to the Western Isles, including Eigg, Canna, Muck and the RSPB reserve of Rhum. Seals are common sightings on these trips and you may even see whales. Isle of Skye: This island can now be reached by bridge from Kyle further north, but the car ferry that runs from Mallaig (foot passengers only during the winter) is the most romantic way to go "over the sea to Skye". The jagged mountains of the Cuillins provide a spectacular backdrop for the sightseer and a formidable challenge to the serious hill walker. Apart from the spectacular scenery, the island abounds with historical sites such as Dunvegan Castle and you will need to leave a full day just to get a taste of what is on offer.
West Highland Railway: The train journey along the West Highland Line that runs between Mallaig and Fort William ranks amongst the most spectacular in the world. In the summer you can do it the old fashioned way on the Jacobite Steam Train. Glenfinnan: About 45 minutes east of Lochailort, on the A830, you will come across the beautiful Loch Sheil where Bonnie Prince Charlie is though to have first landed on the Scottish Mainland. The monument at Glenfinnan commemorates this event and the visitor centre there gives an insight into the romantic but often bloody history of the Highlands.
Ben Nevis: Towering above the "Outdoor Capital" of Fort William, Britain's Highest peak at over 4000 ft can easily be tackled within a day trip from Marino Lodge. Nevis Range: Close to Fort William you will also find the Nevis Range skiing area. The resort is Britain's most modern and boasts the country's only cable car which runs during the summer months as well as in the winter - an easy way to "climb" the slopes of Aonach Mor! These are just a few ideas and you'll find plenty to do in the area whatever your interests. Have a look at The Road To The Isles Website for more information |
